MVP TO SUPPORT STUDENT OPERATED PHARMACY

December 3, 2015

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) has received a major gift from MVP Health Care to help launch its new student operated pharmacy located at the Hometown Health Centers (HHC) clinic on State Street in Schenectady.

The pharmacy will be managed by a licensed pharmacist with support provided by ACPHS students. In addition to dispensing medications and providing related services, the pharmacy will be a “collaboratory,” whereby the college and HHC will team up to offer an expanded range of clinical services associated with patient wellness, including point-of-care screenings and associated disease state counseling.

The student operated pharmacy at the Hometown Health Centers site will be named “College Hometown Pharmacy.” It is scheduled to open in early 2016.

“Pharmacy is an integral component of the full service healthcare experience,” said Christopher Del Vecchio, Executive Vice President of Strategy at MVP Health Care. “Helping to bring this valuable service to an otherwise underserved population helps us to achieve our vision of creating the healthiest communities. Adding to the pharmacy and health care services, our outreach staff is available at the health center to help patients get the coordinated coverage they need to lead healthier lives. MVP is proud to be part of this innovative health care model.”

“We would like to extend our appreciation to MVP for their support of our student operated pharmacy in Schenectady,” said Greg Dewey, President of Albany College and Health Sciences. “MVP is an ideal partner for this initiative as they share our desire to provide essential healthcare services for members of our local communities. Their support will help ensure that our students are able to benefit from experiences that will not only make them ‘practice ready’ when they graduate, but will allow them to go beyond practice ready.”

Funds to support the the student operated pharmacy are being raised through the College’s“Beyond Practice Ready” campaign, details of which were announced on December 1.
