FACULTY MEMBERS RECEIVE PEER RECOGNITION

October 14, 2015

ALBANY, N.Y. – October 14, 2015 – Associate Professor Tom Lodise, Pharm.D., Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Nimish Patel, Pharm.D., Ph.D., AAHIVP, have each been honored by the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP) for their research accomplishments.

Pharmacotherapy Paper of the Year

Dr. Lodise received the SIDP’s Pharmacotherapy Paper of the Year Award. It is the second time in five years that Dr. Lodise has won this award.

The Paper of the Year Award recognizes a significant contribution to the peer-reviewed literature in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy by an active or associate SIDP member, which has made, or has potential to make, the most significant impact on future infectious diseases practice and/or research.

Dr. Lodise was recognized for his paper titled, “Vancomycin Exposure in Patients With Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Bloodstream Infections: How Much Is Enough?” The research article appeared in the July 16, 2014 edition of Clinical Infectious Diseases, the official publication of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

The publication was based on a study led by Dr. Lodise that examined more than 100 patients suffering from MRSA bloodstream infections with the goal of determining the optimal way to dose the antibiotic vancomycin in the treatment of these patients. The findings are helping redefine the way providers dose vancomycin, the most commonly prescribed intravenous antibiotic in the United States for patients with MRSA bloodstream infections. The findings also served as the preliminary data for Dr. Lodise’s prospective clinical study with the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group.

Young Investigator Award

Dr. Nimish Patel was named the recipient of the organization’s Young Investigator Award. He is the third ACPHS faculty member since 2007 to receive this award (Dr. Lodise and Amit Pai are the others).

The Young Investigator Award recognizes past research accomplishments, rewarding young investigators who show research promise in the broad area of infectious diseases. Nominees were evaluated on research funding, publication record, leadership, teaching, and honors or awards received for their research.

Since earning his Pharm.D. from ACPHS in 2006, Dr. Patel has compiled an impressive list of research accomplishments. These include:

Serving as the principal investigator on five grants totaling nearly $200K
Serving as co-Investigator on six grants
Publishing 31 articles (as lead author or co-author) in peer reviewed journals
Publishing 42 abstracts
Delivering 29 invited presentations
“Over the past decade, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has developed a recognized expertise in infectious diseases pharmacy. Drs. Lodise and Patel have played key roles in forging this reputation, and these awards provide further evidence of the quality of their work and the important contributions they have made to the field,” said Tarun Patel, Ph.D., Provost of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
