Medical School Advisory Committee (MSAC)

The Medical School Advisory Committee serves prospective medical school students by assisting them throughout their application process. You must apply to the MSAC and be accepted by the committee in order to receive their support (a list of application materials is detailed below).

Applying to MSAC

If you are interested in learning more about the medical school admission process, you may reach out to an MSAC member at any time. You are also encouraged to use the resources, guides, and information found on the sidebar of this page.

Once you decide to begin the medical school application process, you should first apply to MSAC for their endorsement. Application to the MSAC Committee typically takes place 1 ½ years before you are scheduled to graduate.

The MSAC will review your GPA, MCAT score, resume, personal statement and preliminary list of medical schools where you want to apply, to ensure they are well suited for your needs.

To be considered for support by the MSAC, you must submit the following documents:

  • Requests for letter
  • Transcripts
  • Resume
  • Personal statement
  • Preliminary list of medical schools where you want to apply (including an Excel spreadsheet with their addresses)

Acceptance to MSAC

If accepted by the MSAC, two committee members will be assigned to you. The committee members will be responsible for developing a letter of reference submitted by MSAC on your behalf (often called a composite letter). The letter is referred to as a “composite” letter since it incorporates evaluations submitted to the Committee from different sources, including faculty members, supervisors, volunteer coordinators, and shadowing physicians. You will also receive assistance with other core application materials such as your resume and personal statement.

If a student fails to gain acceptance from the MSAC, the Committee may recommend steps for them to take in order to strengthen their application. These recommendations may include additional coursework, participation in co-curricular activities or pursuit of health care specific experiences.
