August 31, 2023

ACPHS STUDENTS PARTNER WITH MED STUDENTS TO PROVIDE NARCAN TRAINING TO SARATOGA COUNTY COMMUNITY

On Thursday, August 31, in partnership with Saratoga Hospital, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Students will put what they are learning in the classroom into practice to help combat the rising opioid epidemic.

Armed with kits from the New York State Department of Health, these teams will recognize a county-wide Narcan Training Day to raise awareness about the availability of NARCAN over-the-counter (since March 2023), distribute kits and work with community members to learn how to properly use it.

There will be about a dozen pharmacy students, faculty and medical students participating across the various locations today. Additionally, a a mobile team will be walking  Broadway and surrounding shelters to also reach homeless patients in need.

Each team will include an ACPHS pharmacy student(s), area med student(s) and pharmacy preceptor - a licensed pharmacist who guides pharmacy students through rotations by modeling professional conduct and decision-making and evaluating students in their practice settings.

Narcan or Naloxone is a life-saving medication used to reverse an opioid overdose. It is to be given to anyone who presents or is suspected to be experiencing signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose.
