Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is honoring National Public Health Week with a series of events designed to raise awareness of critical population health issues such as domestic violence, reproductive and sexual health, mental health, and food, nutrition and physical health.

“The COVID-19 pandemic really put public health back in the spotlight,” said Allison Burton-Chase, chair of the Population Health Department, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “The College offers academically rigorous courses toward an undergraduate degree in public health that will set a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing this area while its Collaboratory in Albany’ South End provides a truly unique public health practice site for students to get first-hand experience applying what they are learning in the classroom.”

While the National Public Health Week observance lasts from April 3 – 9, 2023, ACPHS will commence their programming on April 4 and continue through April 13, 2023.

Programming Line-Up

Kicking off the week on April 4, help ACPHS swipe out hunger! Donate a meal swipe anytime during the student center cafeteria hours to help those in need. All donations will be used to stock the ACPHS Food Pantry. With support and collaboration from Chartwells.

On Monday, April 10, in tribute to April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month observance, join fellow students to take a stand against domestic violence from 12 – 1 pm in the Gozzo Student Center Atrium.  Students will receive a purple ribbon to raise awareness and receive information regarding campus resources for reporting domestic violence crimes and assisting students in need. Participants will have an opportunity to decorate a tote bag and take away resources, as well as stickers, water bottles, bracelets and candy!

Do you want to exercise, but don't know where to start? Join fellow ACPHS students Monday from 12:30 – 1:30 pm in the Student Center Atrium as they launch their new, self-help website for ACPHS students who are interested in exercising but are looking for additional information. Attendees can scan QR codes to see how to perform different exercises and read tips about establishing an exercise routine. Participants can enter to win a raffle for a $50 gift card.

Also, on Monday evening from 5 – 6 pm, chat with students in the Student Center about reproductive and sexual health issues. Come get additional information, candy and condoms, as well as a chance to win an Amazon gift card raffle.

Learn more about public health practice in our community with speakers Sabrina Howard from the ACPHS Collaboratory and Sara Adams from Trinity Alliance on Tuesday, April. The talk will take place from 11 am - 12:30 pm in Holland Administration Building Room 022. Join us to gain some PhIT credits and enjoy a Panera bagel!

On Thursday, April 13, the focus will be on mental health at "Succulents & Spill the Tea" from 11 am - 12 pm in the Panther’s Den in the Gozzo Center. This event embraces the importance of self-care and aims to promote mental health across campus. Event attendees will plant succulents and enjoy tea with fellow students, faculty and staff.
