Interested in activism and community engagement? The Black Student Union and Black History Month Committee offer students opportunities to participate in fun events that elevate Black voices through history, culture and personal relationships.

“This is a good opportunity to engage, to broaden your horizons and have new experiences,” said chair of the Black History Month Committee Christalee Santouse, a P3 student in the Pharm.D. program.

Each year, the BSU hosts movie nights, dessert decorating nights and various tabling events. The Black History Month Committee plans and organizes events for Black History Month, like their annual kick-off brunch, Atrium decorating night, and hair care lectures.

“By participating in activities that the BSU and BHMC hold, we get to share our history, not only in American culture but science as well,” fourth-year public health student Cassandra Todd said. “It’s kind of a gateway or pathway for other minority students to see that they’re not alone.”

Both organizations are open to all students. Events offer the chance to learn about a new culture, meet new people and advocate for minority students.

The Black History Month Committee’s remaining events this year include Cultural Games Night on Feb. 24 from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Rite Aid Lounge and the About Your Crown workshop with professional hair stylist Lavida Barkley on Feb. 27 from 6-8 pm in the Rite Aid Lounge. Be sure to check the Engage platform for BSU events throughout the semester.
