Residents and Fellows Graduate from Prestigious Programs

Pharmacy residents and fellows were feted at a graduation luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn on June 5, celebrating the completion of prestigious post-graduate programs at ACPHS and other institutions.

Residencies and fellowships are considered career accelerators, sometimes said to be worth three to five years of work experience. Residencies, which typically include a stipend, are typically attractive to pharmacists who want to work in such areas as specialized medicine, highly competitive major hospitals or academia. Pharmacy industry fellowships provide opportunities to learn about medication development, approval, safety and other issues while working for a company or the government.

In remarks to the graduates, ACPHS President Toyin Tofade stressed they were exceptionally well-prepared.

“Never underestimate the power of your training,” President Tofade said. “All of the preceptors here would not allow you to graduate if they could not trust you with their own lives.”

Eight residents also received certificates for completing the Teaching and Learning Program, an additional elective that trains residents to be effective educators, whether to patients, other providers, or students on rotations or in the classroom, said Dr. Gina Garrison ‘94, ‘98, ACPHS’ professor of pharmacy practice who directs the TLP program.

Dr. Angel-Rose Weber, who completed a residency at Albany Medical Center, received the Dr. Zeolla Resident/Fellow Excellence Award, named in memory of ACPHS alum and faculty member Dr. Mario Zeolla ’97, ‘99.

ACPHS Associate Professor Dr. Yi Zhou received the inaugural TLP Mentor of the Year Award.

Residents and fellows invited to the celebration either completed a residency or fellowship program affiliated with ACPHS and/or completed the TLP program offered by ACPHS for external residency programs.
