New health center aims to fill South End void

A new community health center, part of an effort by Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to bring additional health and social welfare services to Albany's South End neighborhood, opened Thursday.

The community health center's opening comes in the wake of an announcement that the Rite Aid pharmacy at 310 South Pearl Street — just blocks away —  is set to close on September 19. Its closure leaves a majority of the neighborhood's residents — many of whom are low-income — with few places to buy medications, as well as food and basic household supplies.
