MEDIA ADVISORY: PUBLIC HEALTH STUDENTS SUPPORT ASTHMA PROGRAM AT ALBANY’S GIFFEN ELEMENTARY

April 22, 2024

The culmination of a six-week program aimed at educating third through fifth graders about asthma at Albany’s Giffen Elementary School is happening Thursday, April 25 at 1:30 pm.

The pilot program connected public health students from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with elementary school students at Giffen weekly to implement the American Lung Association’s Open Airways for Schools Program.

According to the American Lung Association, asthma is the most common, chronic, childhood illness and the number one cause for children missing school. In addition, there is a historically reported higher prevalence of asthma cited in Albany's South End.

The Open Airways program teaches children how to recognize the triggers of asthma and control their condition so they can reduce their hospital visits and school absences. The children then share this information with their own families to ensure there is a consistent approach to care. Program materials are available in both English and Spanish.
