Here's some great news for Panthers who want to stay healthy or, say, need a physical for athletics:

ACPHS students now have access to a student health center.

Through a new partnership with Russell Sage College, ACPHS students can receive medical services at wellness centers in Albany and Troy. Services are provided free of charge, as they are covered by the ACPHS student health and wellness fee. Referrals to specialists or laboratories require payment through health insurance or other means.

For students on the ACPHS campus, the Albany Wellness Center is no more than a 15-minute walk and also has ample parking. The Troy center is also available for those who find it more convenient.

Whatever your health issue — big or small — the wellness center is the right place to start for treatment, said Tawana Davis, associate vice president for student life for student wellness at Russell Sage College. Nurse practitioners working in collaboration with a physician will treat students on the spot or let them know when more advanced treatment is needed.

“It’s always a good idea to come here first,” Davis said.

The Russell Sage College wellness centers take a holistic approach, integrating medical and mental health, Davis said. Often, students arrive for one reason, and wellness center staff realize other treatment may be warranted, she said. For ACPHS students who need mental health referrals, the wellness centers will connect them to the ACPHS Office of Counseling and Wellness.

“We believe in a warm handoff, not just a referral,” Davis said.

The wellness centers are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Staff advise students to call first before arriving, to find out the best time to come. But while appointments are preferred, walk-ins are also welcome.

“If you don’t feel good, you don’t want to be sitting in the waiting room,” said Cindy Monaghan, a nurse practitioner at the Albany Wellness Center (pictured with graduate student Kara Wilson). “You want to be waiting in your own room until it’s a good time to come over here.”

Her advice is to call or get there when the center opens, as most students prefer to come later in the day and it can get busy. Only two days after opening for the semester, Monaghan said ACPHS students were already utilizing the center.

ACPHS Vice President of Student Experience John Felio said he was delighted with the partnership and expressed appreciation to the ACPHS Student Government Association for their ongoing support in this effort.

“This partnership with Russell Sage College makes sense economically and helps us efficiently fill a gap in on-campus health services, enhancing the ACPHS experience for our students,” Felio said.

More information, including wellness center hours of operation and phone numbers, is available on the ACPHS Health Services web page.
