Easier to get, deadly as ever

Cheaper, purer and easier to get, heroin and its paralyzing grasp has crept back into communities across the country.
Last week alone, Albany County saw a stunning number of heroin-related cases: a female addict forced into prostitution in Colonie; a stabbing in typically tranquil Voorheesville; and arrests that netted more than 1,000 bags of the deadly drug in several suburbs and cities.
On Tuesday night at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Science, Sheriff Craig Apple, addiction treatment specialists, recovering addicts and a parent of another addict in treatment participated in a forum on heroin and its pandemic.
"Heroin addiction is the most horrible form of cancer I've seen," Apple said. "It just spreads."
