Microbiology BS
In the BS in Microbiology program at ACPHS, you’ll study bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms to understand how they affect human health and how we can control or harness them.
Prepare for a variety of science careers by studying core biological disciplines including cell biology, genetics and biochemistry. Learn how fundamental processes of life apply to health and disease.
If you’re fascinated by how the body works, curious about genetics or passionate about solving health challenges, the Biomedical Sciences program at ACPHS is a great place to start. As a biomedical sciences major, you’ll dive deep into the science of life—studying everything from cell biology and molecular biology to genetics and human systems.
What sets our Biomedical Sciences program apart? A strong focus on human biology, amazing opportunities for undergraduate research, internship experiences that connect you with professionals in the field and partnerships with top graduate and health-professions schools. You’ll graduate with the knowledge, skills and experience to take your next big step—whatever that may be.
You won’t just learn from textbooks—you’ll work side-by-side with expert faculty in small classes and hands-on labs, using advanced tools and technologies to explore the same questions that professional scientists are tackling today. Whether you’re thinking about medical school, veterinary medicine, pharmacy or a career in biotech, research or public health, this program gives you the foundation and support to get there.
The Biomedical Sciences program at ACPHS gives you a strong scientific foundation and hands-on experience to launch a future in medicine, dentistry, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, public health and more.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics projections, 72% of biomedical graduates in the U.S. worked in one of these occupational groups:
Explore professional organizations like the American Medical Student Association, a student-led group that fosters a community of future physicians through education and advocacy.
Or join Doctors Without Borders (MSF) at ACPHS, a student-led group supporting global health and health-care access through campus events, fundraising, awareness campaigns and local volunteer work—making an impact that starts in Albany and extends worldwide.
Our faculty are dedicated to ensuring the success of our students. They teach in both classrooms and labs, providing students valuable time with professors and mentors. Our location in Albany, the state capital, provides easy access to major research facilities, including New York State Department of Health laboratories, as well as major biomedical research and pharmaceutical companies.
Graduates of the program are expected to fully integrate theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills of the broad discipline of biology with scientific reasoning, critical thinking and communication skills. You will be encouraged to conduct hands-on research with faculty on projects such as isolating bacteriophages against soil bacteria, designing therapeutic strategies for breast cancer and understanding the mechanisms of cell death. You will also be encouraged to pursue internship opportunities to gain real-world experience in the field and the lab, as well as network with peers and professionals.
Biomedical Sciences coursework at ACPHS prepares you for a wide range of science and health-related careers by exploring core subjects like cell biology, genetics and biochemistry. You’ll learn how the fundamental processes of life connect to human health, disease and the development of medical solutions.
Upon completion of the program, you will have:
With focused and hands-on experience in the lab, you’ll build the skills to succeed in science and health care.
Explore human anatomy with the Anatomage Table—an interactive 3D tool that lets you virtually dissect and examine the body in stunning detail.
Collaboration in action—students and faculty work side-by-side in the lab, applying their knowledge to scientific challenges.
You and your classmates learn by doing, working with your professor to explore advanced lab techniques and bring science to life.
“The Biology program is excellent. All the classes I need to apply to vet school are here, and even some others I wish I had taken.
