The New ACPHS/WAUSM Accelerated Pathway to MD (APMD) Program is the First, and Only Six-Year Accelerated Pathway to Medical School Offered in Upstate New York, and One of Only a Handful of Six-Year Accelerated Programs Offered in the United States

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM) are proud to unveil a new academic partnership offering students a fast-tracked route to earn their MD in as few as six years.

This innovative Accelerated Pathway to MD (APMD) collaboration provides eligible ACPHS students with a reserved seat in WAUSM’s MD Program, streamlining their journey from undergraduate studies to medical school. Students will complete their bachelor’s degree at ACPHS and transition directly into WAUSM’s MD curriculum, accelerating their timeline to practice while gaining access to personalized instruction, advanced clinical training, and a globally respected medical education.

“A critical aspect of our 2024-29 Strategic Plan is to expand through relationships with institutions that share our mission of educating the next generation of health-care leaders,” said ACPHS President, Toyin Tofade. “We are thrilled to include Western Atlantic University School of Medicine in the growing list of relationships we are developing with partners abroad.”

Dr. Paula Wales, WAUSM’s provost and chief operating officer, highlighted the synergy between the two institutions. “ACPHS and WAUSM share a commitment to educating future leaders to improve public health. We’re excited to welcome ACPHS students into our community and support their growth into compassionate, skilled physicians,” she said.

WAUSM’s purpose-built campus in Freeport, Grand Bahama, offers cutting-edge facilities and a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, ensuring personalized instruction and support. Students benefit from an immersive U.S. clerkship program at WAUSM’s partner teaching hospitals, preparing them thoroughly for residency and beyond. WAUSM’s academic excellence is reflected in its 100% first-time pass rate on the USMLE Step 1 exam.

“This partnership opens doors for our students to pursue their medical aspirations with clarity and confidence,” said ACPHS Vice President for Academic Affairs, Sibdas Ghosh, PhD. “As a College committed to educating the next generation of health-care leaders, WAUSM’s emphasis on mentorship and academic rigor aligns perfectly with our values.”

Since 1881, ACPHS has been a leader in preparing students for careers in health sciences, with a strong track record of supporting underrepresented groups in STEM. The College continues to invest in its future, including the development of new interdisciplinary learning spaces that foster collaboration and innovation.

With this agreement, ACPHS joins a growing network of U.S. colleges and universities partnering with WAUSM to offer accelerated MD pathways. These articulation agreements provide a streamlined and supportive route to medical school for motivated students who meet defined academic benchmarks.
