Students look into microscope during a session in Future of Healthcare Workshop

Citing an exponentially growing need for healthcare workers, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will host its first Future of Healthcare Workshop designed to showcase the breadth of opportunities in the healthcare industry to a diverse group of exceptional students who were nominated by local school leaders.

Approximately 150 students in grades 9 – 11 from nearly 45 public and private schools who were recommended by school administrators will attend the Friday, March 15 event at the College. The students were selected due to their educational achievement and commitment, with expressed interest in science, math or healthcare.

“We are so fortunate to have exceptionally talented students in this region who are interested in pursuing careers that improve the health of our society,” said ACPHS President and Professor, Toyin Tofade. “It is an unprecedented time in the healthcare industry with future leaders needed in roles across the field. ACPHS is poised and ready to educate this next generation of health care leaders and looks forward to meeting these outstanding students.”

The Workshop’s Itinerary

The workshop will include sessions focused on both academics and career planning. During the academic sessions, ACPHS faculty will teach coursework through hands-on activities. Faculty will also provide insight on what types of healthcare careers these students can pursue from the programs they teach.

Professional staff from St. Peter’s Health Partners will also be onsite to inform and educate students about the careers available to them with degrees related to healthcare. Participants will hear from the St. Peter’s Health Partners’ talent acquisition team and clinical staff and have an opportunity to ask them questions.

“Working with St. Peter’s Health Partners is an ideal opportunity to help prepare qualified students to fill their high-need positions,” said ACPHS Director of Admissions Wendy Diefendorf. “ACPHS is delighted to welcome students from in and around the Capital Region to learn about the many healthcare pathways available to them.”

Students will have an opportunity to tour the ACPHS campus featuring state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and meet dedicated admissions staff who can help them plan for their futures.

“St. Peter’s Health Partners is pleased to strengthen our partnership with Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,” said James Biegner, director of talent acquisition at St. Peter’s Health Partners. “We believe together our organizations will improve quality and accessibility of health care within the Capital Region by introducing health care career options to our local students.”
