Black History Month Spotlight: Dr. James McCune Smith, Physician and Pharmacist

James McCune Smith was born in Manhattan to an enslaved woman on April 18, 1813. He was born an indentured servant because the New York State Gradual Emancipation Act of 1799 stated people born to slave women after July 4, 1799, would be free, indentured servants to the master of their mother until adulthood. He was later freed from this servitude on July 4, 1827, at age 14, by New York's Emancipation Act.

From Pharmacy Students to ‘Farmacists’

Given that Kaitlyn and Nicholas Rehberg met at ACPHS, you might assume their initial connection was pharmacy. After all, when they met in Fall 2019, Kaitlyn (then Strumski) was a sophomore majoring in pharmaceutical sciences and Nicholas was in his last year of the pharmacy doctoral program. Turns out, though, they were not smitten so much by a shared interest in pharm life, but in farm life. Or perhaps it was a combination of those things – an unlikely coupling of passions that neither expected to find in another.

Panther Profile: Christian Rivera-Vazquez

Christian Rivera-Vazquez is a P2 student in the PharmD program.  He completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Puerto Rico before transferring to ACPHS. He is a peer mentor and a National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) membership chair. Last semester, the bilingual Rivera-Vazquez was called on to translate for a Spanish-speaking patient at College Parkside Pharmacy, one of two student-operated pharmacies at ACPHS.
