The nearly clear liquid that Dhruba Bharali swished appeared unremarkable — like slightly murky water in a beaker.

But the solution held by the Pharmaceutical Research Institute nanotechnologist was filled with invisible particles he has spent six years formulating. Measuring one-millionth of a hair's breadth, these nanoparticles have the potential to change treatments for cancer by making medications more effective and less toxic to patients.

PRI, part of the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is this week hosting a five-day conference on nanomedicine, bringing together scientists from all over and highlighting work being done at Capital Region institutions, including the pharmacy school, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Albany Medical College, the Stratton VA Medical Center and the state's Wadsworth Center.
