Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences ushered 120 students along their academic journeys to become pharmacists at the September 26 White Coat Ceremony — a nearly 20 percent size increase over last year’s Pharmacy class.
The annual tradition of a white coat ceremony symbolizes a commitment by P1 students to become competent and caring professionals. The cloaking is performed by faculty members of the College, who have the responsibility of guiding students on their path to becoming pharmacists.
The Albert M. White Gymnasium on the ACPHS campus was packed with family and friends and the ceremony culminated with a reception in the Gozzo Student Center.
School of Pharmacy Dean, Dr. Elena Umland, welcomed the students and their guests, followed by a keynote address from alumnus and professor Laurie L. Briceland ’83, PharmD, FASHP, FCCP, who was also honored for her 39 years of service to the College. Her daughter Dr. Christina Lombardi ’17, a clinical oncology hematology pharmacist at St. Peter’s Health Partners, presented flowers to her mom.
Professor and Pharmacy Practice Department Chair, Katie Cardone ’06 presented the students to be cloaked and Scott Wood ’27, APhA President, Albany Chapter led the recitation of the Oath of a Pharmacist.
In a special cloaking moment, ACPHS alumna, Aimee Strang ’95, ’98, surprised her daughter, Madeline Strang ’29, with her first white coat.
Closing remarks by Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Strategic Partnerships Dr. Darren W. Grabe ’93, ’95, and Walgreens Upstate New York, Healthcare Supervisor, Benjamin Rametta ’03, who sponsored the event, concluded the time-honored ceremony.
