P1/AP1 Orientation Guidance

The P1/AP1 Orientation dress expectation is business casual.

A business casual dress expectation calls for everyone exercising good judgment. The following lists are not intended to be all inclusive. They are intended to set general parameters for proper business casual dress and to help you make appropriate dress decisions. Keep in mind that business casual does not mean weekend or sport casual. In addition, you should avoid worn, frayed, wrinkled, stained, or tight-fitting clothing. Remember that you should always dress appropriately for your duties and schedule for the day regardless of the business casual dress policy.

Slacks

Slacks, khakis, and corduroys are acceptable. Both men and women are expected to wear clothes that are laundered and pressed.
Inappropriate choices include blue-jeans, shorts, sweatpants, overalls, leather, spandex or other form-fitting workout wear.

Shirts

Casual shirts, blouses, sweaters, sport jackets, and turtlenecks are within guidelines.
Inappropriate choices include midriff or spandex tops, printed T-shirts, sweatshirts, muscle shirts, and halter tops.

Dresses and Skirts

Dresses and skirts are appropriate but must be longer than the laboratory jacket. They should be reflective of an office environment.  Inappropriate choices include minis, spaghetti straps, open backs, low-cut, or revealing dresses.

The White Coat Ceremony dress expectation is professional and our laboratory dress code gives a nice overview of what this looks like.

The laboratory is considered a professional work environment and everyone must be professional in appearance. To that end:

  •     All students must wear a clean, short, white laboratory jacket.
  •     All students must wear a name tag on their laboratory jacket which clearly displays their first and last name with the title ‘Pharmacy Student.' (Name tags received from an employer are acceptable.)
  •     Closed toe shoes are required
  •     Comfortable shoes (including clean sneakers) are encouraged
  •     Skirt, dress or non-denim slacks with a blouse, shirt, collared shirt and tie
  •     For safety or utility reasons, additional restrictions may be imposed

Inappropriate dress includes:

  •     Denim jeans and shorts
  •     Sandals, open toed shoes, work boots, old or dirty sneakers, moccasins and slippers
  •     Halter tops, midriffs, revealing blouses and t-shirts
  •     Skirts and dresses need to fall below mid-thigh
  •     Exercise clothing (sweatpants, sweatshirts, yoga pants, etc.)
  •     Hats, caps
