Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences -
New Name, Same Commitment
to the Advancement of Health Care
New Name Reflects Range of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs
Now Offered at the College
ALBANY , N.Y. - October 16, 2008 - The Board of Trustees, in conjunction with President James J. Gozzo, Ph.D., announced today that Albany College of Pharmacy has expanded its name to become Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences . The new name, which was approved by the State Board of Education, has been chosen to better reflect the broad range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs now offered at the College.
Over the last several years, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has added to its core degree program in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) with B.S. degrees in pharmaceutical sciences, clinical laboratory sciences and health and human sciences; a certificate program in cytotechnology; and opportunities for students to pursue joint degrees in medicine, law or business through cooperative agreements with area schools. This past year also saw the approval of the College's first three master's degree programs - Pharmacy Administration, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health Outcomes Research.
"While the pharmacy program remains central to our mission, we are building around it with new and expanded programs to better align with the needs of students and the demands of a constantly evolving health care industry. We believe the name change will play an important role in driving this institutional growth," said President Gozzo.
The name change will precipitate other changes with the school. The College has unveiled a new logo which retains its traditional burgundy and white colors and features the pediment of the school's signature structure - the O'Brien Building. The building, which has served as the central campus building since its opening in 1927, is named for Francis J. O'Brien, the long time dean of the College who served as a member of the faculty and administration for 47 years, from 1920-1966.
Additional changes include the College's web site URL, which becomes www.acphs.edu effective today. The old URL ( www.acphs.edu ) will also continue to work for an additional six months.
"The College has seen remarkable growth in the past decade, highlighted by new academic and research programs that build upon a foundation of academic excellence established more than 125 years ago. The Board of Trustees believes that the addition of 'Health Sciences' to the College's name will play a key role in helping the College take the strong reputation it has earned in pharmacy and extending it to other fields within the health care industry," said Kandyce Daley, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
In addition to the new academic programs, the last ten years have seen the following developments at the College:
