Heroin Addiction and Overdose

Assistant Professor Lauren Purington was a guest on the television program "Health Link." The episode focused on various aspects of opioid addiction. Dr. Purington discussd recent research that shows drug use can fundamentally change the structure of the brain, making an individual more susceptible to relapse and cravings.
Dr. Purington has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan, and among the classes she teaches now is one called “Drugs of Abuse.” She is a former member of the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Research Center, and she has received research funding from both the Center and the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
She was joined on the show by Michael Dailey, MD, FACEP, director of pre-hospital emergency care at Albany Medical Center, and Lynda Tymeson, CASAC, Director of Program Services of Hope House, Inc, a residential recovery program in Albany.
