Research Interests:

• Dr. El-Fawal’s main research is focused in two broad areas: neurodegenerative and cardiopulmonary diseases. In particular, the Neurotoxicology laboratory is interested in the contribution of environmental chemicals: pesticides, heavy metals and solvents to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Interactions between Nervous and Immune systems, with the hope of developing biomarkers of neurotoxic effects, is the current emphasis. Exploring the interrelation between the two systems relies on a wide range of laboratory sciences. In a parallel vein, the laboratory is exploring the pulmonary and nervous system toxicity of ambient ultrafine particles and man-made nanoparticles.
